A Shortlist of Current Projects

physician

I began work as an independent family doctor and anesthetist in 2009. Over a decade later, I still love my job — even though each year has brought challenges and change. My patients have taught me as much about the art of medicine as medical education has done about the science of medicine. I occasionally mentor and supervise medical students and residents.

I count myself lucky to serve as faculty at the University of Toronto’s Department of Community and Family Medicine as well as the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.

health policy strategist

In December of 2018, I flew to London, England to join classmates from around the world for an Executive Masters in Health Policy, Economics and Management at the London School of Economics. It was a gruelling and thought-provoking program that taught the gamut of health economics, health system financing, health system performance, quality improvement, management principles and so on. I now understand why healthcare systems around the world work the way they do. I understand their function — and dysfunction. My professors were world-renowned experts and I am grateful to their time and dedication.

I pay it forward as a Lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in its inaugural Fundamentals of Health Policy and Economics course (System Leadership and Innovation Masters program). It was a challenge to co-design a course from idea to implementation and I am grateful for Dr. Sara Allin’s partnership.

I work and have worked on policy to improve our healthcare system on a local, regional and provincial level:

  • Primary Care Lead for the Halton SCOPE program

  • Medical advisor for Khure Health

  • Facilitator for TIDE (Toronto Initiative for Diversity and Excellence)

  • Board Chair, Halton Hills Family Health Team

  • Co-Chair, Collaborative Advisory Group for GP and FP-Anesthesia

  • Central Region Primary Care Council

  • Past co-Chair of the OMA’s Primary Care Working Group

  • Past member of the OMA Section of General and Family Practice executive

For the work that I’ve done, I was the recipient of the following honors

  • 2023 Eugenie Stewart Teaching Award

  • 2020 Canadian Women in Medicine Inspiring Physician Leader award

  • 2020 Louise Lemieux-Charles Health System Leadership Award

  • 2018 Teaching Award of Excellence

  • 2018 Toronto Life’s Top 50 Most Influential People

ontario medical association

Arguably, in one of the most meaningful, challenging and extraordinary opportunities, I was an active Board Director in the Ontario Medical Association from 2017-2020. This culminated in my becoming the President of the Ontario Medical Association.

I oversaw an operational review and restructure, governance reform in physician representation, governance reform of the OMA Board, recruitment and onboarding of a new CEO, and thought leadership/ policy innovation through the OMA. I worked with an incredible team of smart, creative and forward-thinking people. I revitalized physician engagement by expanding the President’s Tour to include over 50 site visits, the first-ever First Nations/ Inuit Tour, as well as a one-of-a-kind comprehensive Northern Ontario Tour. I improved internal and external communications, engaging in hundreds of media and public speaking engagements. I was the voice of the profession before members, public, stakeholders and government. And finally, I oversaw the the OMA’s first-ever arbitrated physician services agreement, a nice change after five years of working without a contract.

It is an honour to serve the profession. I have continued much of the same work independently as Past-President.
